When Jesus tells us to take up our crosses and follow him, he doesn't just mean to bear our burdens and difficulties. In Roman times, if you took up your cross, there was no going back. You were headed for execution, no reprieve. Jesus calls us to leave our old lives behind. He crossed a line, no going back, and he expects the same from his followers. We consider Mark 8:31-38.
