It’s a big change, for sure. I’m not minimizing the folks who have lost jobs, had hours cut, etc. I appreciate the folks who continue to work hard to keep our society functioning. So, yes, it’s serious.
But we’re not in hiding. We can still walk in our yards or on our streets. We can call people. We can Facetime. It’s not the same as getting together with friends and family. But it’s not solitary confinement.
It really could be worse (and, yes, for many people it already is). I intend to focus on what’s still good. My HVAC works. We have a good bit of food, and ways to get more. In fact, I’m doing more cooking than I’ve done in a long time, and I suspect I will not starve.

Yes, I find myself spontaneously throughout the day feeling gratitude for so much! It makes sense to me as the best way to weather this unusual time. As one of my favorite authors, Martin Buber, observed (parsphrasing), we may not have much control over external circumstances, but we do have control over our reaction to those circumstances.
