More Than What We Do

12 April 2026 at Church Street UMC

This week’s message is a little different.

I had the privilege of preaching at Church Street United Methodist Church for Disability Awareness Sunday, and the video below includes their full worship service. I’ve also included the audio of just the Scripture reading and sermon for those who prefer to listen.

The message centers on a simple but unsettling question:

What if a life can matter deeply, without ever looking impressive?

In Genesis, we hear again the familiar phrase, “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” But Isaac’s story is quieter. Less dramatic. And yet, as I said in the sermon, “Isaac is included for one reason: he belongs.”

That same truth reaches toward us.

We live in a world that measures worth by productivity, independence, and achievement. But much of our lives (especially as we grow older) tells a different story. We rely on one another more than we often admit. That dependence doesn’t diminish our worth, but rather reveals something that has been true all along.

We are more than what we do.

This week’s sermon invites us to see people differently, both ourselves and one another, through the grace of belonging.

We’d love to see you in person at Lincoln Park-Lynnwood United Methodist Church, 3120 Pershing Street, Knoxville, TN. Come as you are. We’re not in the judging business. We’re in the welcoming business.
